Originally from Lancaster, PA, when Erin first moved to Key West she worked as a Gymnastics Coach at the Key West Sports Academy. A graduate of James Madison University in Virginia with a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology, she has also completed her Montessori credentials at the San Diego Montessori Center for Teacher Education. Erin joined the May Sands Montessori School as a Lower Elementary Classroom Assistant in 2015, and transitioned to the role of Kindergarten Lead Guide in 2019. She has always had a love of sports and physical activity – growing up Erin especially loved soccer and gymnastics, while now she enjoys getting on the water to paddle board, and taking a good bicycle ride.

Kristin DeKeyrel, Lower Elementary Guide (6-9 years)

Kristin has been a Lead Guide at May Sands Montessori School since 2013. She spent her first year as an Upper Elementary Lead Guide before transitioning to the Lower Elementary program. Kristin received her Bachelor of Arts in Geography Education from Illinois State University, then completed her Montessori Elementary I & II credentials from Midwest Montessori Teacher Training Center in Deerfield, Illinois. She starts the day with an energizing Cross-Fit workout, and makes it her goal to travel somewhere new every summer. So far Kristin has traveled to London, Oslo, Paris, Rome, and Sydney!

Katie Haas, Lower Elementary Guide (6-9 years)

Katie started as an Upper Elementary Lead Guide at May Sands Montessori School in 2013 and transitioned to the Lower Elementary program in 2019. She has her Masters in Education from Long Island University CW Post, New York, and completed her Montessori Elementary I & II credentials at Seacoast Center Montessori Teacher Education Program in Charleston, South Carolina.  Katie and Ben, her significant other, have a gorgeous baby girl whose name is Ellis – she was just born in 2018. As a family they enjoy spending time together on their boat and exploring the beautiful Florida Keys.

Sandy McCoy, Upper Elementary Guide (9-12 years)

Originally from Orlando, Florida, Sandy graduated from the University of Central Florida (“Go Knights!”) with a Bachelor’s of Science in Anthropology in 2008. Soon after graduating she decided to go into education and taught 8th grade Science for 8 years in the Orange County Public Schools. In 2017, Sandy and Ryan, her husband, and their two children Roland (6 years) and Stella (3 years), moved to Key West. This is also when she stumbled upon May Sands Montessori school and fell in love with our school and the philosophy of Montessori education. This exciting new discovery started her on a journey – she became an Upper Elementary Lead Guide for our school, and completed her Montessori Elementary I & II credentials from the American Montessori Society in the summer of 2019. Sandy says ” It is a privilege to work with you and your children, and I look forward to a wonderful and memorable year.”

Kate Barrow, Upper Elementary Guide (9-12 years)

Originally from New York state, Kate has been living on the Dutch Side of Sint Maarten since 2002 teaching various subjects and age groups from Kindergarten to medical students, and was the Directress of the Upper Elementary Program at the St. Maarten Montessori School for 10 years. It was on St. Maarten that she grew to appreciate the beauty, and hardships, of tropical island life and looks forward to discovering the wonders of Key West. With a Masters of Science in Education and her Montessori Elementary II credentials from the American Society of Montessori, Kate has worn many hats in her lifetime and says she is “looking forward to sharing these experiences along with… sparking joy and a love of learning within each student.”



Glenn Grizzard, Early Secondary ELA & Social Studies (13-14 years)

Lower secondary specialist, Glenn Grizzard, comes to us from the Appalachian Town of Boone, North Carolina. Glenn taught middle school, and also served as Director, of Mountain Pathways Montessori School in Boone for 14 years, in addition to teaching Educational Psychology at Appalachian State University. Prior to moving to Boone, Glenn taught gifted classes and Social Studies at a public school near Athens, Georgia, where he had attended the University of Georgia for his undergraduate and graduate work. “Go Dawgs!” In addition to his passion for college football, Glenn enjoys golf, travel, and learning all that he can about the world so he can share it with the children!

Laura has recently joined us from Lakewood, Ohio, bringing with her more than 15 years’ experience in teaching. Much of her experience has been in Family and Consumer Sciences – teaching life skills such as food and nutrition, career planning, and financial management at the middle and high school levels. Additionally, Laura has experience in Special Education in a variety of settings from elementary through high school. Here at May Sands Montessori School, she will be in a teacher of support role to all classrooms. Laura enjoys sharing with her students her passion for living a healthy lifestyle and building a love a learning. When not at school she tries to be outside as much as possible – running, walking her dogs, and getting out on and in the water. Laura, her husband, their 4 dogs and cat are happy to make Key West their new home and no longer have to makes their commutes in the snow!

Jeff’s family first moved to the Florida Keys in 1969. After moving several times internationally and across the U.S, he returned the Keys in 2013 to be closer to his parents. He is the proud father of 3 grown children, whom have graduated from college and live in Texas. Jeff has a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education and completed is graduate work in Educational Administration at the University of Texas at Tyler. Having taught 5th grade environmental education for more than a decade, he hopes to bring outdoor living skills to the students so they may enjoy a lifetime of being outdoors and living a healthy lifestyle with their families. Jeff says his “goal is to equip students to participate fully in exercise, develop their motor skills, enjoy a good sweat, and have loads of fun together with their classmates.” When not at school he thrives on being on a kayak, swimming with his dog Gabby, planting native trees to benefit native wildlife, and looks forward to more traveling with his best friend Heather – finding adventure and exploring other cultures. Jeff is excited about working with your children and teaching them principals of physical education and health.
