Our school was recently named co-beneficiary with Sigsbee School for the upcoming 5K Shamrock Shuffle run/walk, sponsored by Irish Kevin’s! The more race participants we have, the bigger benefit for our school. Sign up to run or walk – make it a fun family fitness event – there will be a costume contest, finisher medals and 5-year age group awards. Author Visit at Books & Books @ The Studios of Key West
Poet and children’s author Kwame Alexander will be visiting Key West March 17th &18th!
Books & Books @ the Studios will host a meet & greet party at the bookstore for Newbury prize winner Kwame Alexander, who wrote a bestselling book about basketball, in verse. Mr. Alexander will say hello to Key West readers at 2 p.m. on March 18 at Books & Books @ the Studios, 533 Eaton St.
Alexander’s surprise success, “The Crossover, won the 2015 Newbery Medal despite being initially rejected by 22 publishers. His new book, “The Playbook,” is an inspiring guide to success in the game of life, combining the wisdom of some of our greatest leaders, including Michelle Obama, Nelson Mandela, and Sonia Sotomayor, with rules for mastering winning attributes like passion, focus, tenacity, and teamwork.
“The advice never feels heavy-handed,” said one early review, “and the author’s voice shines through.” Alexander is the author of many other books for children of all ages. “I think books are like amusement parks, and sometimes we have to let the kids choose the rides,” he has said.

Key West Lighthouse and Keepers Quarters (938 Whitehead St.)
Join us for a day of drama at the Key West Lighthouse and Keepers Quarters. Participants will create puppets and perform a play written by local playwright Alicia Merel titled Barbra Mabrity: Keeping the Light in Key West. This workshop will be cross-disciplinary learning at its best. Throughout the day students will learn about Barbara Mabrity, a female lighthouse keeper and her young family that maintained the lighthouse for 23 years. The play includes the destruction of the original lighthouse during the Great Havana Hurricane of 1846 and reconstruction of the current lighthouse.

Understanding the points of perspective will add dimension to artwork by exploring the world of shading from light sources. In this workshop, your child will learn how to transform their two-dimensional images into three-dimensional shapes. This drawing technique illustrates how things appear to get smaller as they get further away, converging towards a single ‘vanishing point’ on the horizon line. Using grids, rulers and pencils the children’s artwork will be transformed after a day of drawing with Ms. Crystal and Ms. Rachel at Fort East Martello.

SKATE CAMP AT COAST

While introducing kids to skateboarding for just one day during our Original COAST Camp, we’ve noticed that kids have a fascination with gliding along under their own power. But biking—which has a very utilitarian basis—skateboarding is much more of an art form. It’s about style and grace—and the things that happen between home and the playground or school. It’s about the journey and not the destination. Eventually, skateboarding can be about tricks and ramps and even competition or sponsorship, but before any of that, there needs to be confidence. And that is what we offer at Skate Camp.
We’ll start with the extreme basics—things like terminology and safety—and eventually move into technique and simple “tricks”. Along the way, the kids will begin gradually, and then suddenly, to understand how their bodies and minds work together to produce a flow and a feel for pushing and maneuvering the board.
By week’s end, our goal is to have every single child significantly improve their initial baseline while building confidence—not just in skateboarding—but in personal growth and artistic expression. From there, we expect each and every new “skater” will have the skills needed to roll, cruise, and coast around the neighborhood with ease.
Reef Relief Spring Break Coral Camp

March 13th -17th from 8:30 am- 4:30 pm.
6-12-year-old children will have the chance to explore and learn about their surrounding marine environment through exciting education activities at the Reef Relief Environmental Center and daily field trips. Campers will also experience four days of snorkeling: one day practicing their snorkel skills at the Key West Marine Park, one day at the seagrass beds and sponge gardens, and two days snorkeling at the reef!

The goal of this camp is to allow the students to develop their individual potential through creative exploration in the area of theater arts. The students will write a play, make the costumes and design the set. To add to the magic of the week musical accompaniment will allow the students to investigate the world of theater through exercises that activate their voices, bodies, and imaginations. Please join us for a Friday afternoon performance that will showcase the students’ hard work.
