I hope that everyone enjoyed the springtime vacation from school; it has been refreshing to see such scholarly activity in the classrooms today!
If you’ve ever read our school mission statement, then you know that having a safe and nurturing environment is pretty important to us. It takes effort from all stakeholders – the adults as well as the students – to create and maintain a safe and caring classroom; it’s everyone’s responsibility. Our classrooms are communities, and students, their parents, and our guides need to have healthy relationships for our classroom communities to thrive. Each of us contributes to our classroom community, and we can maintain a nurturing environment through dialogue. I am grateful for each student, parent, member of staff, and board member that has helped build – and will continue to nurture – our school community.
Welcome!
We welcome a new member of staff to the Conch Classroom today; Mrs. Sandy McCoy, who is an accomplished teacher with a specialty in Science, will serve as the lead instructional support in the classroom with Ms. Erin and Ms. Julia. We’ll have an all-school opportunity to say ‘hello’ to Mrs. Sandy this Friday at Flag Raising Ceremony (8:30).
Blood Drive
We will host our next drive Thursday, March 30, 2017, from 10:00-4:00 right in front of our school! Hop on the Big Red Bus and earn two service hours as well as a Fandango movie voucher. The friendly staff @ OneBlood will have plenty of staff working so donors should be able to get in and out pretty quickly, too! Click this link to reserve your appointment:
Art Project
Parents are invited to join Ms. Bria on any Tuesday or Thursday to help with the development of a school mural. Students will be working on the mural from 10 am-2 pm on Tuesdays, and from 10 am-5 pm on Thursdays. This is a great way to complete service hours for your family!
Extended Day Care
Exciting additions have been made to the Afterschool Club Program!
- Beginning Monday, March 27th, Theater Club will begin rehearsals for “Space Pirates” a musical play about acceptance and peace. All lower and upper elementary students are invited to participate. We will meet every Monday and Wednesday 4-5 PM, with a snack at 3:45 PM.
- Running Club continues on Mondays.
- Gardening Club with Ms. Deb continues to be a hit with all program levels.
- Beginning next Thursday, we will begin working on our annual Kinetic Sculpture Project and continue to do so until the Kinetic Sculpture Parade on May 6th at noon. For more information on this parade, see below
- Friday is Ukulele Club. We will be performing on April 4th at the Smoking Tuna.
All Clubs are $15 per day (standard aftercare fee) and include a snack. $12/day fee applies for students who are pre-paid. Clubs end at 5:00 PM but children are welcome to stay in aftercare until 5:30. Any students who are already in aftercare and do not wish to participate are welcome to stay in the art room to do homework or quiet, free draw during Club time.

Parade Float Creation
I will be hosting a series of builder’s workshops beginning Thursday, April 6 after school from 4-5, in preparation for the second annual Papio Kinetic Sculpture Parade. Students will have the opportunity to help develop our float for this year’s event, and I hope to inspire their creativity to join in the parade; this year I’d like to have even more representation from our May Sands Montessori Community in the parade!
